Arlington is a Bennington County town of about 2,460 people between Manchester and Bennington, with the Batten Kill, famous for trout fishing, flowing through the center of town. It was the first capital of the Vermont Republic in 1777, and Norman Rockwell lived and painted here from 1939 to 1953, using his neighbors as models. The 1852 covered bridge on the green in West Arlington is one of Vermont's oldest. Arlington runs its own schools, including Arlington Memorial High School (grades 6-12). Current Arlington listings appear at the bottom of this page, and our Arlington market report shows recent sales and prices.
The Batten Kill runs through the heart of Arlington, and it's famous for trout fishing. In West Arlington, the Arlington Green Covered Bridge, built in 1852, crosses the river just south of Route 313; it's 80 feet long, on the National Register, and one of Vermont's oldest surviving covered bridges, with no 20th-century reinforcement added.
Arlington has an outsized history. In 1777 it became the first capital of the Vermont Republic. Norman Rockwell lived here from 1939 to 1953, settling on River Road in 1943 and using Arlington neighbors as models for his calendars, advertisements, and magazine covers. Author and educator Dorothy Canfield Fisher, credited with bringing the Montessori method to the United States, also lived here.
Manchester's shops and restaurants are just north, and Bennington is to the south.
Arlington runs its own school district. Younger students attend Fisher Elementary School, and grades 6-12 attend Arlington Memorial High School in Arlington.
Buyers in Arlington find historic village homes, colonials and farmhouses, homes along the Batten Kill, country homes with mountain views, newer homes, and land. See what's for sale now in the listings below, and check recent sale prices in the Arlington market report, which updates as homes sell.
For homes near the Batten Kill or its brooks, read the seller's flood disclosure and check the flood zone. For older homes, plan for a thorough inspection, including lead paint for homes built before 1978.
Vermont's property transfer tax, paid by the buyer at closing, is 0.5% on the first $200,000 of a primary residence and 1.47% above that; 3.62% for a second home suitable for year-round use; and a VHFA-financed primary residence is exempt on the first $250,000.
