About Avery's Gore
Avery's Gore is named for Samuel Avery, a Westminster official who received roughly 52,000 acres in eight separate gores and grants in the 1790s as compensation for land he had claimed under New York. It sits at high elevation, and its brooks drain to both the St. Lawrence River and Connecticut River basins.
Gore Mountain, in the eastern part of the gore, is one of the 50 highest peaks in Vermont.
How the Unified Towns & Gores Work
Avery's Gore has no town government of its own. Its town business, including the town clerk and land records, is handled by the Unified Towns & Gores of Essex County (UTG), which also covers Averill, Ferdinand, Lewis, Warner's Grant, and Warren's Gore. The UTG's mailing address is in Island Pond (05846), and it keeps zoning bylaws and flood hazard regulations. For school arrangements, contact the Essex North Supervisory Union, and ask the UTG early about taxes, zoning, and permits for any property you're considering.
