Danville is a Caledonia County town of about 2,335 people in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, on US Route 2 west of St. Johnsbury. It has a village center, the lake community of West Danville on Joe's Pond, a stretch of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, and its own PreK-12 school, the Danville School. Current Danville listings appear at the bottom of this page, and our Danville market report shows recent sales and prices.
Danville is hill-farm country, with miles of dirt roads, rolling hills, farms, and town forests. Chartered in 1786, it was named for the French cartographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. The village is also home to the Charles D. Brainerd Public Library, which reopened in 2017 billed as Vermont's smallest library, and the town hosts the annual convention of the American Society of Dowsers.
West Danville is the town's lake village. Joe's Pond, 396 acres and shared with Cabot, is a multi-season recreation spot for residents and visitors. Every spring it hosts the Joe's Pond Ice Out Contest, a decades-old tradition: people buy $1 tickets to guess the exact moment a block set on the ice falls through, with proceeds supporting the pond's water quality. West Danville is also a trailhead for the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, a 95-mile rail trail across northern Vermont, and the town's 150-year-old train station is a treasured community landmark.
The Greenbanks Hollow Covered Bridge, built in 1886, is another local landmark. St. Johnsbury's shopping, hospital, and I-91 access are a short drive east on Route 2.
Danville School, in the Caledonia Central Supervisory Union, serves students from preschool through grade 12.
Buyers in Danville find village homes, historic farmhouses, rural homes on acreage with long views, lake homes and camps on Joe's Pond, and land. See what's for sale now in the listings below, and check recent sale prices in the Danville market report, which updates as homes sell.
Buying on Joe's Pond? Development and clearing within 250 feet of a lake larger than 10 acres may need a state shoreland permit, and some camps are seasonal, so ask about year-round use, winter access, septic, and water supply. For homes on dirt roads, check road maintenance and mud-season access. Our second home guide covers what to check.
Vermont's property transfer tax, paid by the buyer at closing, is 0.5% on the first $200,000 of a primary residence and 1.47% above that; 3.62% for a second home suitable for year-round use; and a VHFA-financed primary residence is exempt on the first $250,000. Estimate your payment, transfer tax, and cash to close with our Vermont Home Cost Calculator. Many Danville homes outside the village have private wells and septic systems; see our Vermont home inspection guide.
