The Town of Essex, including Essex Center, has about 11,500 residents, and the City of Essex Junction, which separated from the town and became Vermont's 10th city on July 1, 2022, has about 10,600. Together they sit east of Burlington along the Winooski River. The town has the Indian Brook conservation area and the Essex Experience shopping center; the city has the Champlain Valley Exposition and an Amtrak stop on the Vermonter. Both are served by the Essex Westford School District, including Essex High School. Living in Essex

The Town of Essex, chartered in 1763, stretches from Essex Center out to wooded hills and farmland. The Indian Brook Town Conservation Area, about 575 acres, includes the 58-acre Indian Brook Reservoir, which the town bought in 1986; it has a boat launch, picnic areas, trails, and trout fishing. the 335-acre Saxon Hill Town Forest is also in town. The Essex Experience on Essex Way brings together shops and restaurants.

The City of Essex Junction is more compact, with village streets and neighborhoods close together. It's home to the Champlain Valley Exposition, which hosts the Champlain Valley Fair, concerts, and events, and to the Essex Junction station on Amtrak's Vermonter, with daily service south toward Washington, D.C. The GlobalFoundries semiconductor plant, one of Vermont's largest industrial sites, is in Essex Junction.

Burlington and the University of Vermont are a short drive west, and Williston is to the south.

Schools

The Town of Essex and the City of Essex Junction are both part of the Essex Westford School District, which also serves Westford. Essex High School, in Essex Junction, serves grades 9 through 12 and adjoins the Center for Technology, Essex. Elementary and middle school assignments depend on the address, so check with the district for a specific home.

Getting Around

Vermont Route 15 runs west through Essex Junction toward Winooski and Burlington, and east through Essex Center toward Jericho.
Vermont Route 289, the Circumferential Highway, crosses the town.
Amtrak: the Vermonter stops at the Essex Junction station.
