Living in North Hero

Life in North Hero revolves around the lake. Most of the town is water, and US Route 2 runs the length of North Hero Island. The Islander, the local newspaper, has been published here since 1974.

Knight Point State Park, 54 acres off Route 2, has a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, and picnic areas, and it's home to the Island Center for Arts and Recreation. A 3-acre natural area there protects about 2,200 feet of largely undisturbed shoreline. North Hero State Park, 399 acres on the lake, is now a day-use park with a concrete boat ramp, picnic areas, and a beach, open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.

Route 2 heads south through Grand Isle and South Hero toward Burlington, and north over the Alburg Passage bridge to Alburgh.

Schools

North Hero is in the Champlain Islands Unified Union School District. North Hero School closed in June 2025, and elementary students (PreK-6) now attend Grand Isle School. The district doesn't have its own middle or high school, so it pays tuition for older students to attend schools elsewhere in Vermont or in New York.
