Bloomfield is an Essex County town of about 220 people in Vermont's far Northeast Kingdom, on the Connecticut River at the mouth of the Nulhegan River, across from New Hampshire. Vermont Route 102 follows the Connecticut along the town's southeastern edge, and Route 105 heads west up the Nulhegan toward Island Pond. Part of the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge is in Bloomfield, and the town holds New England's record low temperature, −50°F, set in 1933. Bloomfield is in the NEK Choice School District, which supports school choice through tuition. Any current listings appear at the bottom of this page.
Bloomfield was originally named Minehead; the Vermont General Assembly changed the name to Bloomfield in 1830. The Nulhegan Mill, built in 1849, brought jobs to the town. On December 30, 1933, Bloomfield recorded −50°F, which remains the record low temperature for New England.
The town sits where the Nulhegan River flows into the Connecticut. The Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, more than 26,000 acres across Brunswick, Ferdinand, Bloomfield, and Lewis, is partly in Bloomfield.
Bloomfield is one of ten towns in the NEK Choice School District, which supports parents' choice of schools through tuition. Contact the Essex North Supervisory Union for current enrollment and tuition details.
Bloomfield has rural homes, camps, river-area properties, and land, but listings are infrequent. Before you buy, confirm:
