Living in Middlebury

Middlebury's downtown grew up around the falls of Otter Creek, which still tumble through the center of the village. It's the kind of small town that has more going on than its size suggests: the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, the college's arts and athletics, and a downtown with shops and restaurants.

Middlebury College, founded in 1800, is one of the country's leading liberal arts colleges, with about 2,770 undergraduates. It also runs the Bread Loaf School of English and the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference on its mountain campus in nearby Ripton, summer Language Schools, and the Middlebury College Snow Bowl, the college-owned ski area near Middlebury Gap.

Getting outside is easy. The Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) is an 18-mile footpath that circles the village, linking public and conserved lands, open year-round and free to the public. Route 125 heads east from East Middlebury into the Green Mountain National Forest toward Ripton and the Snow Bowl.

Practical things are close to home, too. UVM Health's Porter Medical Center, a 45-bed critical access hospital, is in town, and Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express has stopped in Middlebury since July 2022.
