Quick Answer
"Newport, Vermont" means two places. The City of Newport, with about 4,450 people, is Orleans County's only city and its county seat, wrapped around the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog in the Northeast Kingdom. The Town of Newport, with about 1,500 people, is the separate, more rural town west of the city, centered on the village of Newport Center. Together they offer everything from in-town homes near shops and the hospital to rural homes with land. City vs. Town: What's the Difference?
In 1917, the village of Newport separated from the Town of Newport and merged with the village of West Derby to form the City of Newport. That's why there are two Newports today:
- The City is the compact regional center on the lake, with downtown shops and restaurants, the hospital, a Community College of Vermont branch, and most of the area's services.
- The Town lies west of the city and is mostly rural, with homes on larger lots and land around Newport Center and South Newport.
Property taxes, town services, and school assignments differ between the two, so confirm which one a home is in before you buy.
Living in Newport
Lake Memphremagog defines Newport. The city surrounds the lake's southern shore, where three of the county's four major rivers empty into it, and the lake stretches north across the Canadian border into Quebec. Boating, fishing, and the waterfront are part of city life in summer.
As the region's hub, Newport has North Country Hospital, the Community College of Vermont, the North Country Career Center, and downtown shopping and dining. Derby, next door, is home to the border crossing, and Jay Peak is a drive to the west.

Getting Around
- Interstate 91 runs through neighboring Derby; Vermont Route 191, the Access Road, connects Exit 27 to the city.
- US Route 5 connects the city south to Coventry and north and east to Derby.
- Vermont Route 105 connects the city with the Town of Newport and Derby.
