Sheffield was chartered in 1793 and has stayed a small, rural town in the hills of the Northeast Kingdom. Its best-known modern feature is the Sheffield Wind project, 16 turbines with 40 megawatts of capacity that began operating in 2011; the town was expected to receive about $520,000 a year for 20 years from it, a large sum relative to the town budget at the time.
The town has been home to poet Galway Kinnell and violinist and composer Malcolm Goldstein. Barton and Lyndonville are each a short drive away, and St. Johnsbury and Newport are reached by I-91.
