Crystal Lake is the town's jewel: 763 acres, about 3 miles long and a mile wide, and 100 feet deep in places, with a coldwater fishery that includes native, wild lake trout along with rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and perch. Crystal Lake State Park, a 16-acre day-use park at the lake's northwestern end, has a sandy beach, boat rentals, picnic areas, and a 1942 stone bathhouse built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, notable for its partly Modern design.

The town has two villages, Barton near the lake and Orleans to the north. Every August, the Orleans County Fair comes to the Barton Fairgrounds, a tradition held nearly every year since 1867. Each spring, rainbow trout swim up the Willoughby River to spawn.

Lake Willoughby and Westmore are a short drive east, and Newport and Derby are to the north on I-91.

Barton is part of the Lake Region Union Elementary-Middle School District, which serves Albany, Barton, Brownington, Glover, Irasburg, Orleans, and Westmore. Barton Academy & Graded School serves kindergarten through grade 4, and grades 5-8 are at the district's middle-grade schools in Glover, Irasburg, and Orleans. High school students attend Lake Region Union High School.
