The village green is famous for its swans, a tradition that began with Royal Swans sent by Queen Elizabeth II in 1961. Much of the town's northwest is the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, where the river meets the lake. I-89 Exit 21 and US Route 7 serve the village, and students in grades 7-12 attend Missisquoi Valley Union (MVU) in Swanton. Living in Swanton

Swanton village sits on the Missisquoi River, with US Route 7 running through as Grand Avenue. The village has its own elected trustees, and its green is home to the swans that give Swanton one of Vermont's best-known traditions: Queen Elizabeth II sent a pair of Royal Swans in 1961, and replacement swans have kept the custom going. The town was chartered in 1763 and named for Captain William Swanton, a British officer of the French and Indian War era.

West of the village, Swanton opens onto Lake Champlain. The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1943, covers about 7,232 acres where the Missisquoi River reaches the lake, including the river delta and the 900-acre Maquam Bog; it's the only national wildlife refuge located entirely in Vermont. Vermont Route 78 runs west from the village and crosses the lake to Alburgh.

St. Albans is a short drive south on I-89 or Route 7, and the Canadian border is to the north.

Swanton is part of the Missisquoi Valley School District. Younger students attend Swanton's public elementary school, and grades 7 through 12 attend Missisquoi Valley Union Middle/High School on Thunderbird Drive in Swanton, which also serves Highgate and Franklin.

Getting Around

I-89 Exit 21 is just east of Swanton village, with I-89 running south to St. Albans and Burlington and north to the Canadian border.
US Route 7 runs through the village.
Vermont Route 78 runs west from the village to Alburgh and east toward Sheldon.
