Living in Thetford

Thetford is spread across seven small villages, each with its own character, from the historic district on Thetford Hill to the river village of East Thetford and Post Mills to the north. The Connecticut River forms the town's eastern border, and the Ompompanoosuc River runs through the middle of town.

It's a great town for getting outside. North of the Union Village flood control dam, a large network of trails between the East and West Branches of the Ompompanoosuc is open year-round for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and birding, with falls and rapids along the river. At Thetford Hill State Park, first developed partly by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the 5-kilometer Woods Hill Trail loop is known as one of the best running trails in New England and is open year-round for hiking, running, skiing, and snowshoeing.

Thetford also has two historic covered bridges over the Ompompanoosuc. The Union Village Covered Bridge, built in 1867, is Vermont's longest 19th-century multiple kingpost truss bridge. The Thetford Center Covered Bridge is the only known example of the Haupt truss in Vermont.
