The Genesis: How Waterbury Got Its Split Personality
- 1763 – The Charter: King George III grants a charter through Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire. The settlers name their new township after Waterbury, Connecticut.
- 1783 – First Settlement: James Marsh becomes the first permanent settler. Natural geography led to the emergence of Waterbury Center along what would become Route 100.
- 1849 – The Railroad Changes Everything: The Central Vermont Railroad cuts through what would become Waterbury Village, shifting economic activity away from the rural center.
- 1882 – Official Split: Waterbury Village incorporates, creating two municipalities that operated separately until merging again in 2018.

As one of Waterbury’s earliest settlements, Waterbury Center developed around its village common with a distinctly different character from its railroad-era sibling.
