West Rutland is a Rutland County town of about 2,200 people just west of Rutland City, built on a history of marble quarrying. It has its own pre-K through grade 12 school, the West Rutland Marsh, a well-known birding spot, and quick access to Rutland's jobs and services on US Route 4, with Killington and Pico to the east. Current West Rutland homes for sale appear at the bottom of this page, and our West Rutland market report shows recent sales and prices.
West Rutland's story is marble. Large, high-quality deposits were found here in the 1830s, and the quarries took off once the railroad arrived in 1851. That heritage lives on at the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center, which works with marble in West Rutland today.
The West Rutland Marsh is designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society and is a popular spot for birdwatching and walks. Rutland City, next door, has shopping, restaurants, the regional hospital, and jobs, and Killington and Pico ski areas are east on US Route 4.
Buyers in West Rutland find village homes near Main Street, older homes from the marble era, and homes with land on the town's outskirts. See what's for sale now in the listings below, and check recent sale prices in the West Rutland market report, which updates as homes sell.
Buying an older home? Plan for a thorough inspection, including the heating system, electrical, and, for homes built before 1978, lead paint.
Vermont's property transfer tax, paid by the buyer at closing, is 0.5% on the first $200,000 of a primary residence and 1.47% above that; 3.62% for a second home; and a VHFA-financed primary residence is exempt on the first $250,000. Estimate your payment, transfer tax, and cash to close with our Vermont Home Cost Calculator. Homes outside the village often have private wells and septic systems, so plan for water testing and a septic inspection; see our Vermont home inspection guide.
