The town includes the lake villages of Bomoseen and Hydeville, part of Bomoseen State Park, and the Castleton campus of Vermont State University, whose roots go back to 1787. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys met here in May 1775 to plan the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. Lake Bomoseen is the town's big draw: about 2,400 acres and 5 miles long, stretching into Hubbardton, with a maximum depth of 65 feet. It's a boating, fishing, and swimming lake ringed by camps and homes, with lake communities like Avalon Beach, Crystal Beach, and Neshobe Beach. Neshobe Island has a colorful past: in the 1920s, critic Alexander Woollcott owned it and hosted Algonquin Round Table friends, and later guests included Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Thornton Wilder, and Walt Disney.
On the lake's western shore, Bomoseen State Park covers 3,576 acres across Castleton and Fair Haven, with two campgrounds, cabins and lean-tos, a swim beach, boat rentals, and trails in the Taconic Mountains.
Castleton village has deep roots. The Green Mountain Boys gathered here in May 1775 to plan the attack on Fort Ticonderoga, Vermont's first medical school was chartered here in 1818, and the college that's now Vermont State University Castleton traces its history to 1787.
Schools and College
Castleton is part of the Slate Valley Modified Unified School District. Castleton Elementary School serves kindergarten through grade 6, and older students attend Fair Haven Union Middle School and Fair Haven Union High School. Vermont State University's Castleton campus, a public college, is in the village.
