Stamford is a small Bennington County town of about 860 people in the southwest corner of Vermont, right on the Massachusetts line, with Clarksburg and Florida, Massachusetts, to the south and North Adams just beyond. Vermont Routes 8 and 100 run together through town. Stamford Elementary School serves PreK through grade 8, and for high school, Stamford families choose their school, with most students heading to North Adams. Current Stamford listings appear at the bottom of this page, and our Stamford market report shows recent sales and prices.
Stamford is a quiet mountain town in the southern Green Mountains. Its village sits in the southern part of town in the valley of the North Branch of the Hoosic River, along Routes 8 and 100.
Location is a big part of Stamford's appeal. North Adams, Massachusetts, with its shopping, services, and the MASS MoCA museum, is just over the state line, and Williamstown and the Berkshires are close by. On the Vermont side, Route 8 runs north through Readsboro to Route 9, the road to Bennington and Wilmington.
Stamford Elementary School, the town's only school, serves PreK through grade 8. Stamford offers school choice for grades 9-12, paying tuition to public high schools and up to the Vermont state average for private schools. In recent years nearly all Stamford eighth graders have gone on to high schools in North Adams, including McCann Technical High School and Drury High School, with others choosing Mount Greylock Regional School and other options.
Buyers in Stamford find village homes, rural homes on acreage, cabins, and wooded land. See what's for sale now in the listings below, and check recent sale prices in the Stamford market report, which updates as homes sell.
For homes near the North Branch of the Hoosic, read the seller's flood disclosure and check the flood zone. For land, check road access and winter maintenance, septic suitability, and Current Use enrollment.
Vermont's property transfer tax, paid by the buyer at closing, is 0.5% on the first $200,000 of a primary residence and 1.47% above that; 3.62% for a second home suitable for year-round use; and a VHFA-financed primary residence is exempt on the first $250,000. Estimate your payment, transfer tax, and cash to close with our Vermont Home Cost Calculator. Many Stamford homes have private wells and septic systems; see our Vermont home inspection guide.
