About Somerset
Somerset sits high in the southern Green Mountains. It holds a Vermont record: on March 5, 1947, it had 78 inches of snow on the ground, the greatest daily snow depth measured anywhere in the state. In 2007, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree was cut from the national forest in Somerset.
The town's best-known feature is Somerset Reservoir, at the headwaters of the Deerfield River. It's a 1,623-acre, 5.6-mile-long reservoir run by Great River Hydro, with a day-use recreation area near the dam that has picnic areas, a gravel boat ramp popular with anglers, carry-in access for paddlers, and trails.

With national forest and reservoir land and only a handful of residents, Somerset listings are rare. Buyers looking here are usually after remote land, a hunting or fishing camp, or a seasonal cabin. Before you buy, check:

With no town office, Somerset works differently. A state-appointed supervisor handles the town's duties, including collecting taxes and serving as school director. Land records are kept at the Windham County Courthouse in Newfane, so your title attorney will search there.
